Surgical relief from chronic pelvic pain

Neil Johnson, Cindy Farquhar

Chronic pelvic pain (dysmenorrhea) can be debilitating for many women. Endometriosis is often the cause, but for 50% of women suffering from dysmenorrhea, no cause or treatments are obvious.
In some cases, surgical relief may be possible – with no adverse impact on fertility. Laparoscopic uterine nerve ablation (LUNA) is a surgical procedure performed by dividing the nerve carrying pain fibres from the uterus, via keyhole surgery.

A randomised trial performed by Neil Johnson and Cindy Farquhar showed LUNA to be effective for women with painful periods who did not have endometriosis. The study did not show any benefit of adding LUNA to the standard laparoscopic surgical removal of endometriosis.
