Lipiodol increases fertility 2-fold in unexplained infertility
Neil Johnson
For 10 – 20% of couples unable to conceive within 12 months, the cause of their infertility cannot be explained. After undergoing a battery of different tests, there is no obvious fertility treatment for these couples – apart from trying in vitro fertilization (IVF), which can be expensive and invasive.
Dr. Neil Johnson led the research that uncovered a 2-fold increase in fertility for couples with unexplained infertility – and a 4 – 5-fold increase if mild endometriosis was also present – by simply flushing the fallopian tubes with an opaque dye called lipiodol. Lipiodol, a poppy seed oil, appears to have fertility enhancing properties which might improve the environment within the uterus and help embryos to implant. For couples with unexplained infertility, lipiodol offers a simple, low cost, minimally invasive treatment that carries a low risk of complications and no risk of multiple pregnancy.
