Laparoscopic surgery for infertility due to endometriosis
Cindy Farquhar, Tal Jacobson
Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the womb and attaches to other organs in the abdominal cavity such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Endometriosis causes painful periods and often results in infertility. Surgical treatment of endometriosis aims to remove visible areas of endometriosis (adhesions) and restore normal anatomy. This review compared the outcomes of laparoscopic surgery to medical treatment or no treatment, to determine which improved fertility. The review found that the use of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of minimal and mild endometriosis may improve success rates. Further research in this area is needed.
