Surgery for tubal disease prior to IVF
Neil Johnson, Martin Sowter
Diseases of the fallopian tube, such as hydrosalpinx (watery substances in blocked fallopian tubes resulting either from infection, endometriosis or previous surgery), can severely reduce the chances of pregnancy while on the IVF programme. A salpingectomy (removing the damaged fallopian tube) can be done to remove the blocked part of the tube. The review of trials found laparoscopic salpingectomy prior to IVF treatment increases the odds of pregnancy and live birth. However, the procedure is very delicate and more research is needed to examine this and other treatments.
